Caring for a child with many medical needs at home is rewarding, but challenging. The family, the child, the child's physician, the skilled nurse and other health professionals involved in the child's care work as a team to plan for the at-home care the child will receive.
What is Skilled Nursing? Skilled Nursing is a service provided to teach/instruct parents and caregivers of their child's medical needs. Often teaching is for GT/NGT feedings and care, wound care, IV antibiotics, TPN, and many other skills. The skilled nurse will educate/demonstrate the patient's ordered care and will require the patient's caregiver to demonstrate back the proper technique of the procedure. The average number of visits approved by Medicaid and Private insurance is typically 3-4 visits, depending on the procedure ordered. During the duration of the visits, a skilled nurse is available 24/7 for questions or concerns.
What is Private Nursing? Private Duty Nursing is a Registered Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse assigned to a patient for one on one patient care for an allotted amount of hours per week. The patient's private duty nurse is responsible for the management of care, with the full support of the agency supervisors, including, but not limited to scheduling of doctor appointments, maintaining the patient's equipment, and ensuring that the patient's area is clean and safe. In addition, the private duty nurse will provide all patient's medical care while on duty including, but not limited to, administering all feedings and medications, bathing, and all orders on patient's plan of care to ensure optimal health.
Who Benefits from Private Nursing? Some children with acute or chronic illnesses are able to leave the hospital if Private Duty Nursing is available at home. Some examples of children who can benefit from Private Duty Nursing are: * Children who need continuous skillful observation and ongoing medical treatment * Children on special life sustaining equipment who need nursing support * Children with multiple chronic medical problems * Children requiring IV Antibiotic Therapy and/or Wound Care * Children who require a G-Tube or NG-Tube
